There are five main methods of communicating to people you want to work with:

Online presence

Networking

Word of mouth

We are going to get deep into each of these in the next chapter, but first I want to stress that you do not have to do all of these things. Remember that whatever form of communication you choose, this is your life. You will be doing this often. Don’t choose something you despise doing. If you truly thrive being in regular contact with community, become depressed when you spend too much time on a computer, and enjoy the intensity of articulating yourself on the spot, don’t choose communication methods that isolate you. Some “marketing” guidance will tell you that certain tactics are a must and that you will not survive without them. Others will assert that you have to be strong on several tactics, having an aggressive multipronged approach. That simply is not true. Remember, you aren’t trying to serve one billion hamburgers or run a global franchise with a multibillion-dollar annual revenue stream. Your “product” is your own energy. You don’t need to convince people to buy something from you that they don’t actually need. Your job is just to communicate with people who want and need your services in a style that doesn’t burn you out.

After you hone in on what you like doing and commit to it, it is important to do it well. If all you are going to use to communicate with the world is word of mouth, you need to be a very well-networked person. Or perhaps you are strongly introverted and only want to have a website—make sure that website is incredible and that you have done the work to make it effective. Having a subpar website, a somewhat-connected word-of-mouth network, plus a social media account you reluctantly intermittently use is a lot of energy going out without a finely crafted and cohesive result. It takes a lot of effort and time to do something well.
